This is my first time to this forum. I was told of the group by my friend Krista Ellis. I am the mother of 3 children and expecting my fourth. I have used disposable diapers for all of my children until this pregnancy. It has been 4 1/2 years since the last time I had a baby and my husband and I have become more conscience of the environmental toll that our family has on the environment. We have tried to lessen our footprint on this beautiful Earth and Clothe Diapers is one of the ways we would like to do this. I am very new to this idea and am tentative on which diapers to buy. My babies are typically in the 90 percentile and I understand that each brand of CD has its pros and cons depending on the size of your baby. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Hello and welcome! You'll find all sorts of information here, and lots of support. My own long-term favourites are prefolds with either a wool or waterproof cover. We have used many other kinds, but that's our default and the one that is always in use for my babies. Good luck, congratulations and looking forward to meeting you!

Welcome - this is the place for varied cloth diaper options and where you can see the different kinds in action.
I'm with Sheri - I mainly use pre-folds and wool covers, but I really didn't try out much else. All in Ones get great reviews too.
I hope to see you at an event soon. Apart from the diaper advice, it's a great collection of diverse mothers who are just really nice people.

Welcome to the group! I too use a lot of prefolds and wool, but it is nice to have a few fitted diapers for the diaper bag, babysitters, and traveling. I also found that now that Mojave is older she seems more comfortable in fitteds because she can walk easier and they fit better under clothes.

Welcome Megan!
I have 4 kids like you. And like you, I used sposies for all 3 of my first and my 4th is the first I've used cloth on. I absolutely LOVE cloth and swear it is BY FAR the best parenting change I've made this time around. BTW...I had a big gap between #3 and #4 also....6 years. Yikes!
My first 3 kids were all big babies in the 90th and above percentile each in height and weight. Then number 4...he's this tiny little 5th percentile thing. I was shocked! Because of that my advice is to stick with prefolds...maybe a few Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds...with covers for the newborn stage.
I'm a big advocate of diaper trials. So once getting past that newborn stage I would do a diaper trial. I was absolutely convinced I would use Fuzzibunz Perfect Size and nothing but when I did my diaper trial. THANK GOODNESS I did the trial because it turns out those just don't work for my LO. Big, gaping holes at the legs...they must be made for big babies. I would have wasted a ton of money buying a huge stash of diapers I couldn't even use if I hadn't done a diaper trial.
Welcome! Jen

Thank you all for the great advice. I will look into the prefolds with wool liners. All of my babies have been born small in the 10th and 20th percentile and within a month have sprouted to the 90th percentile....good fatty milk I guess :-) We are very excited for this change.

So I have to say that searching for cloth diapers has been an adventure with many confusing turns. I have really liked all of the reviews that I have read regarding hemp/cotton prefold diapers. The Thirsties seem like a great way to go. Now I am wondering how many to get of each size. Also, how many wool covers to get. What is a good start?

Welcome, Megan!
A good rule of thumb is 1 dozen diapers per day per newborn. After the newborn stage you don't need quite so many. So if you want to wash every other day you would need 24. Every three days means 36 diapers. For covers you can get away with as little as 2 per day.
Hemp absorbs like crazy, but some people have had trouble with it getting stiff. I have found that my hemp items are not holding up as well as my cotton items, but that is after years of use already.

Welcome! Looking forward to meeting you soon Lots of opinions and ideas on diapers around here, lol! I second the idea of doing a diaper trial or at least not buying **all** the same kind of diaper like I did. Nothing absorbs as well for us as our GMD prefolds and wool is a must for us at night.
